2023, nous voilà en présence d’un millésime qui respire.
Il témoigne de la puissance des terroirs, de leur résilience et de leur force. Il se caractérise par un bel équilibre entre acidité et maturité, fraicheur et richesse. Le nez est mûr, noir, profond. C’est expressif. Une douce minéralité apparaît comme un voile léger et apporte fraicheur. La bouche est longue ; elle tend vers le chocolat noir, les arômes de garrigue et réglisse. C’est droit, dense, structuré et gourmand. Les tanins sont encore un peu rigides. Après plusieurs mois d’élevage en foudre puis en bouteilles, le Vieux Télégraphe 2023, classique et déjà harmonieux, a gagné en générosité et en rondeur. Le nez s’est épanoui, laissant apparaître des notes davantage épicées que fruitées. Les tanins, désormais plus fondus, soutiennent une bouche à la fois souple et corsée. On pressent qu’il conserve encore une part de mystère. Ce Vieux Télégraphe illustre parfaitement la richesse patiente du terroir de La Crau : il ne se livre jamais d’un seul bloc, mais se dévoile par strates, au fil du temps et de l’attention. Un millésime que l’on pourrait rapprocher des 2015 et 2020 par sa maturité et son équilibre, mais dont la profondeur et la structure laissent entrevoir un potentiel de vieillissement encore supérieur. Un vin de grande garde à mon sens.
With 2023, we find ourselves in the presence of a vintage that “breathes,” one that is both classic and singular. It proves the power and resilience of the terroirs, and is characterized by a beautiful balance between acidity and maturity, freshness and richness. There’s a gentle veil of minerality, and the nose is expansive, making way for notes that are more spiced than fruity. The tannins have softened, yielding a mouthfeel that’s both supple and bold. There is more to uncover in this wine. It is a Vieux Télégraphe that perfectly illustrates the unhurried richness of the La Crau terroir. It never gives us everything all at once, but instead reveals itself in small doses over time and with careful observation. It’s a vintage that can be compared to 2015 and 2020 for its ripeness and balance, but whose depth and structure suggest superior aging potential. This is a wine with a long life ahead of it.

(94) The 2023 Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Crau is going to turn heads for a long time to come. Pronounced violets, wild strawberries and melted licorice mingle with blackberry and garrigue on the complex aromatic profile. Alluring, concentrated and superbly structured through polished tannins, the full-bodied 2023 is such a gorgeous Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Crau.

(97-98) In spite of its extreme youth, this great Chateuneuf-du-Pape leaps out at you with its depth of wet-earth, ripe red-berry and dried-flower aromas. Rich and concentrated, but so suave and refined. Incredible length! Can’t wait to taste this masterpiece as a bottled wine!

(95) The classic 2023 Châteauneuf Du Pape checks in as 70% Grenache, 15% Mourvèdre, and 15% Syrah raised all in foudre. It’s another incredibly classic wine from this domaine that has beautiful red fruit (cherries, framboise) as well as a mineral-laced array of garrigue, sappy flowers, and crushed stone. With medium to full-bodied richness, a pure, elegant mouthfeel, and building tannins, it will benefit from 2-4 years of bottle age and have two decades of overall longevity.

(92-94) Vinified with 20% whole clusters, the 2023 Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Crau unwinds from the glass with fragrant rose petal, wild strawberry, licorice, and stemmy subtleties. Juicy and expressive, the full-bodied 2023 is immediately alluring, precisely balance and remarkably elegant on the complex finish. I can’t wait to taste it from bottle.
